Join Florence Academy of Art graduate Troy Argyros for a two week portrait painting workshop. Students will be limited to three, and Troy will be painting alongside. 

The workshop will focus on sight-size portrait painting from the life model, with continual demonstration throughout the two weeks as students will be able to observe Troy painting a portrait from start to finish. Critiques will be held twice per day, and further discussion is always welcomed in the model breaks and long break.

In addition to his Florence Academy training, Troy has recently studied at Charles H. Cecil Studios, focusing on portraiture. In this workshop students will benefit from his expertise from his time spent at both of these esteemed schools."

"Some key skills you will leave with include: 

- Setting up a portrait from life in the correct sight-size position, working to the scale of life.

- Blocking in directly with oil paint on canvas

- How to mix and utilise oil painting medium

- Palette mixing demonstration using a limited palette of Lead White, Yellow Ochre, Light Red/Vermilion, and Ivory Black

- A visual approach to painting reinforced with a conceptual understanding of expressing three dimensional form under a single light source

- Sensitivity to the beauty and working properties of north light

- Learning how to use different distances from the model throughout the two week period

- Subtle modelling and glazing as necessary

Troy Argyros (b. 1990, Melbourne) is a classically trained oil painter and draftsman who is an alumnus of The Florence Academy of Art. He has recently undertaken further study at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, focused on portrait painting. His artistic interests centre on the delicate portrayal of light and atmosphere within the genres of portraiture, the nude, still life and landscape. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art Painting and a Graduate Diploma of Visual Art Education from Monash University, and has also studied intermittently at The Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney.

 

Troy has exhibited his work in group shows throughout Australia and Italy, including The AME Bale Travelling Scholarship in Melbourne and "Oceania" at Gruppo Donatello in Florence. He has held six solo exhibitions in Melbourne, and is included in several private collections internationally. Troy is a visiting tutor at The Florence Art Studio in Florence and Fitzroy Painting in Melbourne where he teaches workshops in academic drawing and painting. In addition, he is also offering private online mentorship and in-person workshops tailored to the individual. In 2017, Troy was awarded 1st Prize in The Graeme Hildebrand Prize for Young and Emerging Artists in the oil painting category. In 2019 he undertook an artist residency at Casa Lu in Mexico City, and over two winters in 2021 and 2022 was an artist in residence at The Art Gallery of Ballarat, creating a half-scale master copy of Solomon J Solomon's "Ajax and Cassandra". Recently he painted a portrait of the renowned singer-songwriter Tina Arena. Troy is currently based in Pisa, Italy, and is available for commissioned portraiture.
